12. Govinda Madhava

* tracks 9 and 10 have a couple moments where the audio cuts out for a second

This tape is awesome.  Bhajan (devotional) music has really captured my attention lately and this is a really fun example.  This musical group seems to have something to do with Śri Sathya Sai Baba but the internet is not being too terribly clear on that point.  My copy is without an insert so I found the tracklist on the internet at the link above.  I hope it's accurate.

Note: including both the image of Side A and Side B pushed the FLAC zip files over the Mediafire size limit.  Here is a link to both images for completists like me:

Also, Tapess is on Facebook now.  So, if you want updates through there, now you can have that.

M. Polin - Ah! Je l'attends / Situation intéressante - Monologue

Here is a very old recording.  It sounds like a very old recording.  Recorded and pressed in 1905.  Can't find much of anything about this singer, not even the first name.  If anyone knows some stuff, let me know.  I'm curious.  Side 2 is literally just a monologue so it's pretty boring if you don't speak French (like me).

This tape is pretty damn energetic.  They're almost throwing too many sounds at you at once.  It's a fun listen.  This dude is from Senegal and he's got a killer voice.

Sorry for the month-long absence of tapes (I hope my uploading spree in April made up for it).  I moved recently and I'm all settled in now and ready to spend more time getting tapes up here.

If you're never listened to this band before, you probably shouldn't make this release the first one you hear.  I highly recommend getting their first album (reissued by Mississippi Records on vinyl and it's only $10) from 1970. This tape I'm posting is from 1990 and has a different lineup which is not bad by any means but you really must hear their music before Salif Keita spawned his solo career and left the group.  This is a great tape and I'm not trying to downplay it.  Just listen to their old stuff first.

10. Sayonara (Lata Mangeshkar)
11. Oh Mere Shahe Khuban (Lata Mangeshkar)
12. Aaja Re Aa (Mohammed Rafi)

I've got a real treat for you all today.  Two of my top 5 Bollywood soundtracks on the same tape!  They fit together very nicely.  Mostly Mohammed Rafi solo songs, which is great in my book.  Shankar & Jaikishan (the composer duo) do a great job of fusing Parisian and Tokyo styles into the music while keeping true to Bollywood sound we all love.  I've said it once and I'll say it again: 60's Bollywood is solid gold.  If you only get one Bollywood tape from this blog, make it this one.

Djeneba Seck is amazing.  Here is a little bio page if you're curious.  The vocals are reminiscent of Nahawa Doumbia at some points.  Really, the only thing I can find to complain about is the short duration of the tape (runs just under 30 minutes, which is why the FLAC fits in one file this time).  Check it out.

In 1996, the Nigerian men's football (soccer) team overcame all odds and came out with the gold medal at the Atlanta Summer Olympics.  This guy was so psyched that he recorded an album for them.  Very energetic, long jams mostly comprised of drums and vocals.  It's about 30 minutes per side so I had to split Side A into 2 parts for the FLAC (scans are in part 2).  Thanks to imago for pointing out what the full/real name of the artist of the tape is.

Okay, okay, these aren't tapes; they're 45rpm record singles.  I found a bunch of Japanese 45s from the 60's and 70's and these were too good to not share.  Hymie's Records always surprises me with amazing finds.  All three of the singles in this download are from the same great singer: Kiyoko Suizenji.  I can find almost nothing about her online (although I admittedly didn't dig very hard).  There may be some more Japanese 45s coming up in the next couple weeks.  The middle sleeve pictured above is a scan of mine and the top and bottom ones were found online since my copies didn't have them.

Here is a spectacular Umm Kulthum tape (although, I think all her work is spectacular).  There's not much I can say about this tape even though I feel the need to put some words here.  The last minute of Side B is a short, instrumental piece with some synthesizers.  I'm not really sure why it's on this tape (probably just to fill space) since Umm Kulthum does not sing in it.  It's cool, though.  Kinda funky with a Dabke-esque synth sounds and lots of percussive drive.

The j-card has titles of praise inscribed on it: Star of the East and First Lady of Arabic Song.  They are well-deserved nicknames.  The lyrics were composed by Ahmed Rami and the music was composed by Mohamed El Qasabgi who composed many wonderful songs for Umm Kulthum and a few other singers.  This is one of Umm Kulthum's most famous and popular works, and for good reason.

There are a couple weird skips in Part 2 which must be due to some laziness during the process of abbreviating the recording (they weren't about to put a 2-hour song on cassette).
